The discovery, development and clinical application in medicine and dentistry has been described and illustrated extensively in two books by Elaine Williams-McClarence: A Matter of Balance (1992) and Close to the Edge – Brånemark and the development of Osseointegration ( 2003) and the book The Book On Osseointegration by Brånemark et al.(2005), published by Quintessence books-Berlin, Germany.

Based on the principles we were taught by Prof. P-I Brånemark, we have specialized in implant therapy since 1991. 2016-01-20 Professor Tomas Albrektsson joined Per Ingvar Brånemark’s team in 1967 and has since been active in applied osseointegration research of oral, craniofacial and orthopedic implants. He graduated from Gothenburg University (MD:1975; PhD:1979 publishing his thesis on the healing of bone graft), where he has served as Professor & Head of the department of Biomaterials between 1986 and 2012. This implant technology was based on the work of Per-Ingvar Brånemark, who first discovered that rabbit bone became strongly bound and inextricably linked with titanium implants, leading to him coining the term osseointegration and using titanium for human dental implants as early as 1965 10.
