Major anatomical parts of the brain include the medulla oblongata, pons, cerebellum, midbrain, diencephalon (including thalamus and hypothalamus), and cerebrum. The medulla oblongata, pons and midbrain together form the portion of the brain known as the brainstem, which continues rostrally with the spinal cord. They have argued that memory is located in specific parts of the brain, and specific neurons can be recognized for their involvement in forming memories. The main parts of the brain involved with memory are the amygdala, the hippocampus, the cerebellum, and the prefrontal cortex. Figure 8.07. The amygdala is involved in fear and fear memories.

The brain and its parts can be divided into three main categories: the forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain. Lobes of the Brain The four lobes of the brain are the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes (Figure 4). The frontal lobe is located in the forward part of the brain, extending back to a fissure known as the central sulcus.
